This portal shows how the pharmacy arm of a UAE healthcare group could serve patients online: one catalogue, one assistant (@burjeel) and one team of licensed pharmacists connecting hospital pharmacies, neighbourhood outlets and home delivery.
Real-world context
The healthcare group this demo uses as its reference, Burjeel Holdings, was founded in Abu Dhabi in 2007 and is listed on the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange. According to its public FY2025 results release (March 2026), its network in the UAE and Oman includes 20 hospitals, 39 medical centres and 15 pharmacies, with retail pharmacies in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Fujairah. These figures come from public sources and may change. None of them describe how this demo works.
The concept
- Hospital pharmacies — inside hospitals and medical centres, dispensing outpatient and discharge prescriptions close to where patients are seen.
- Standalone outlets — neighbourhood pharmacies for walk-in advice, over-the-counter products and pick-up of online orders, with select outlets open 24/7.
- Home delivery — order on the site or in the chat, with free delivery above AED 100 and delivery in 60 minutes in select areas.
What licensed pharmacists do
A pharmacist is more than the last step before payment. For every order that involves a prescription, a licensed pharmacist:
- checks the prescription is valid, current and issued by a licensed prescriber;
- reviews the dose, known allergies, duplicate therapy and interactions with other medicines;
- explains how and when to take each medicine, and what side effects to watch for;
- recommends suitable over-the-counter options for minor ailments — and knows when to refer you to a doctor instead;
- makes sure temperature-sensitive and restricted medicines are handled correctly.
Quality & regulation
In the UAE, pharmacies and pharmacists must hold a licence from the relevant health authority — depending on the emirate, the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH), the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) or the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP). Medicines must be registered for use in the country, prescription-only medicines need a valid prescription, and controlled and semi-controlled medicines follow stricter rules. Under Federal Decree-Law No. 38 of 2024, in force since January 2025, the Emirates Drug Establishment has a central role in approving medical products and monitoring their safety. In Abu Dhabi, home delivery of medicines follows a DoH standard for delivering pharmacy medication.
This demo is designed around those principles:
- every product is badged as over the counter, prescription-only or controlled;
- prescription-only items are held until a pharmacist verifies the prescription;
- controlled medicines are never offered online;
- temperature-sensitive products are shown as needing cold-chain handling;
- you are encouraged to report suspected side effects to your doctor or pharmacist.
